Myth
Alcohol makes you happy.
Fact
Alcohol is a depressant.
In very small amounts it can make you feel more relaxed or less anxious. More alcohol affects the brain more and leads to staggering, loss of co-ordination and slurring of your speech. When drunk some people can then get over friendly and talkative whilst others get aggressive and angry.

 

Myth
Alcohol makes people seem more attractive.
Fact
Alcohol alters your perception affecting emotions, movements, vision and hearing. It also makes you “disinhibited” which means you act on impulse rather than thinking about consequences. This can mean you get into situations you later regret like behaving in an embarrassing way or even having sex.

 

Myth
Anyone is allowed to possess alcohol at any age.
Fact
It is illegal to sell alcohol to or buy alcohol for anyone under 18 years old. Police will confiscate any alcohol found on a minor (someone under 18).

 

Myth
You are legally allowed to drink alcohol in a pub at 16.
Fact
A 16 year old can have an alcoholic drink or cider or beer at a pub with a meal at the landlord’s discretion.
